As part of a first step initiative aimed at improving the lives and health of individuals and communities across the globe, PokerListings.com, the largest Internet poker guide, has donated $10,000 to UNICEF, one of the foremost children’s aid organizations in the world, to help protect Albanian children from trafficking. The newly launched charitable branch of PokerListings.com seeks to raise awareness within the poker community about human rights abuses and injustices around the world and hopes to make a difference by giving back to the world and fulfilling the duty as a responsible member of society.
Many of Albania’s children are taken abroad to live and work on the streets as sex workers, forced laborers, and beggars, and, occasionally, are used for the sale of organs. Often, their own families send them away to generate much needed income. The human rights violations experienced by these children create a unique situation, which calls for immediate action by governments and international aid organizations.
“We here at PokerListings.com believe UNICEF’s work helping to protect the children of Albania and South Eastern Europe is one of the most important international aid campaigns taking place in the world today,” said community and public relations coordinator at PokerListings.com. Working together with international and local organizations, UNICEF is involved in the organization of educational anti-trafficking campaigns, the provision of resources for proper emotional and physical treatment, and the funding of vocational and recreational programs to reintegrate children back into their communities.
